Mosaic linked to this article on Flickr, which I found quite informative. Honestly, I don't know how anyone could have expected that when some Palestinians shot and killed Israelis in Jerusalem and sought refuge afterward on the Temple Mount, Israel would not react by installing metal detectors and cameras there, but hey, who asked me? :(

The metal detectors were not installed because the assailants sought refuge in the Temple Mount complex after attacking the police officers. It was because they, or someone else, had previously brought the weapons they used on to the mount and stashed them someplace in one of the mosques on Har haBayit. The metal detectors were to prevent a re-occurrence.
